Acorn Companion Support
Therapeutic Recreation & Companionship
In addition to offering therapeutic recreation to improve physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being, I also provide companionship to older adults. This companionship helps reduce loneliness and isolation, offering emotional support and meaningful connection through conversation and shared activities.
Social Engagement Activities
Social engagement is crucial for mental well-being, and social activities are tailored to promote connection. Through playing games, reminiscing, and socializing with others, I create opportunities where older adults can build friendships and share experiences. These activities help combat loneliness and enhance overall happiness.
Physical Activity & Movement
Physical activity is tailored to individual abilities and focuses on improving strength, balance, and flexibility. Daily routines incorporate gentle exercises, stretching, and movement that promote physical health while ensuring safety. Regular movement can lead to increased mobility and a more active lifestyle. Additionally, the mental and emotional benefits of movement are emphasized, including stress relief and improved mood.
Fall Prevention
Thorough home safety assessments are conducted to identify potential hazards that may lead to falls. Personalized recommendations for modifications and safety measures are provided to ensure a secure living environment. This proactive approach significantly reduces the risk of accidents. In addition, fall prevention exercises are shared, along with guidance on how to safely get up after a fall.
Creative Art Programs
Creative art and craft programs are designed to stimulate imagination and self-expression. Painting, pottery, scrapbooking, crafting, and other artistic activities not only provide joy but also improve fine motor skills and cognitive function. These activities foster a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence.
Cognitive Enrichment
Engaging cognitive activities are provided to stimulate the mind and support cognitive health. These include brain games, technology instruction, puzzles, trivia, memory exercises, word and number challenges, creative writing, storytelling, and strategy-based games such as card games or board games. Each activity is designed to promote mental agility, encourage social interaction, and enhance overall well-being.
Tactile and Sensory Activities
Tactile and sensory activities engage multiple senses. These activities include hands-on experiences like sensory bins, textured crafts, baking, and aromatherapy. They also involve music, gardening, and nature walks, stimulating touch, smell, sight, taste, and sound. These sensory experiences promote relaxation, improve focus, and bring joy.
Emotional Well-Being and Self-Expresion
The emotional domain of therapeutic recreation promotes well-being and self-expression. Activities like art and music therapy, journaling, and reminiscing foster emotional expression and reduce isolation. Relaxation techniques such as guided meditation, mindfulness, and reflection help manage stress. Additionally, spiritual practices like prayer or attending church provide a sense of purpose and community.
